In just a few weeks I will be leaving for my most epic trip abroad. 85 days. That’s practically 3 months abroad. In the grand scheme of things, its epic because on average, Americans usually only vacation for 2 weeks per year. I tested the waters last year when I spent the month of January on the island of Utila, and I loved it. So when this winter rolled around, and I was facing layoffs again, I decided I would make the best of it and complete some additional diving classes while on the island of Utila.
Last year I did my PADI Rescue Diver course while on the island in January, and although the course is short, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot as well as gained a ton of confidence handling situations while diving. This year I plan to take it to the next level and then some! First course I will be doing is the PADI Divemaster course, which is the first professional level course I will be taking. In the Divemaster course, you learn how to be a dive professional, and handle some teaching duties while learning how to lead groups on your own. Typically, the Divemaster course takes 4-6 weeks, so I should be wrapping up my class in Mid February. Upon completion of my Divemaster course, I plan to enroll in and complete my IDC (Instructor Development Course) which will finish in the 3rd week of March. Once certified as an Open Water Scuba Instructor, I can teach everything from Discover Scuba Diving classes all the way thru the Divemaster course.
I look forward to getting back on the island, hanging out with some old friends and making a ton of new friends, indeed, the island is a unique place, and there is no place on the earth like it.
