Ok, so I have to admit, I am a bit excited about this trip. First trip out of country since I went to Japan for business in 1999. This time its for fun, a long overdue vacation you could say.
You see, a friend of mine owes me for lots of little projects I have done for him over the years. A graphic here and there, some web work from time to time, and I always told him don’t worry about paying me, I would collect later.. Being a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, he knew that meant some free classes and a refresher course, as I am only basic PADI Open Water certified and haven’t been diving since 1996 when I completed my open water dives!
Now, I don’t want this vacation to be all diving, there’s too much to see and do down there to miss out on. I’m planning on a few days of diving, starting with a refresher, and perhaps advancing to Advanced Open Water with the Peak Performance Buoyancy course, I’ll see depending on the weather. I would also like to spend a night in Playa del Carmen, head down to check out the caves and ruins at Tulum, take a Razr ride in the jungle that includes suspension bridges, ziplines and snorkeling in a remote freshwater cenote. With a little luck, I’ll get in a night dive to see the octopus on the reef, and maybe even catch some spiny lobster for dinner one night!
Lucky for me, my buddy will be putting up with me for the week, and although I have hotel reservations for Playa, Tulum and Cancun, I’ll see how things end up playing out. As my luck would have it, a section of road collapsed in a giant sinkhole between Playa del Carmen and Cancun on August 27th, and that may be forcing me to adjust my plans a little.. I just may end up in Cozumel for the entire time and flying the puddle jumper back to Cancun International Airport instead!
